Reservations FAQ | Avis Rent a Car

Most Avis rental rates include either unlimited kilometres or a pre-designated number of included kilometres per day/week/month as part of the rate structure. If you exceed the number of pre-designated kilometres, a per kilometre charge will apply for the additional kilometres driven. If there is a kilometre allowance as well as an additional kilometre charge, you will be advised at the time you request your rate information. It will also be shown on your rental document.

A minimum charge of one rental day (24 hours starting at the time of rental) applies to rentals returned in less than 24 hours. For other rates, specific minimum rental periods may apply. In some cases, the minimum length of rental may be a specified period of time for the selected rate to apply. In other cases, a rate may have a minimum charge, which applies even if the car is returned early.

Avis offers special monthly rates for rentals lasting from 59 to 330 days. Avis does not engage in long-term vehicle leasing. For more details see Avis Mini-lease.

As a courtesy to fellow customers, please cancel any unneeded reservation as soon as your plans change. In certain cases and with certain rates or vehicle groups, a cancellation fee may apply if an unwanted reservation is not cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the reserved pick-up time.

Please enter your coupon number in the field named "Coupon Number" during the second step of the reservation process. You will find this field on the "Discounts & Rental Options" page.

Note that coupons, discounts and upgrades are not reflected in the "Estimated Total".

Avis accepts many major charge cards as credit identification at the time of rental. Acceptable charge cards include:

  • Sears
  • Visa


Note: Some locations may not accept some of the above charge cards.

Canadian and U.S. Debit (Interac) cards are not accepted as credit identification at the time of rental; however, Canadian and U.S. Debit cards may be used for payment of charges at the conclusion of the rental.

Rates are based on the length of time the vehicle is rented (day, week or month) and the kilometre allowance, if any, associated with the rate. Time-and-kilometre charges are included in the base quoted rate. All taxes (including Air Conditioning Excise Tax Recovery Fee and Vehicle License Fee), surcharges and optional products (such as LDW) are extra and are not included in time-and-kilometre charges.

Yes, Avis reservations can be booked directly through your travel agent.

Generally, "weekend rates" apply on rentals beginning on a Thursday, and require the vehicle to be returned by 11:59 pm (one minute before midnight) on the following Monday. Many weekend rates require the vehicle to be kept over a Friday or Saturday night, to be eligible for the rate. If the vehicle is returned later, the weekend rate will not apply to the rental. Weekly rates are available for rentals of more than 99 hours (4 days 3 hours), but less than 28 days.

 

During peak periods of demand, such as holiday periods or special events, certain rates or car groups at certain locations may not be available for reservation or rental.

Any applicable taxes and surcharges are included in the "Estimated Total" of the reservation. Desired additional optional services may be indicated by the renter at the time of reservation and accepted at the time of rental as shown on the rental document.

Rental charges are subject to applicable local taxes which vary based on rental location.

Avis does not require a deposit to reserve a vehicle on most vehicle groups. However, certain car groups do require a deposit.

Taking a vehicle to another province is generally not a problem. However it is best to inquire about any restrictions or fees that may apply if driving outside the province. There are also special requirements to be able to drive into the U.S.

No, you do not require a Wizard® Number to make a reservation.

Enter your Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) number in the field labeled "Avis Worldwide Discount" (AWD) or "Rate Code", found on the homepage, or during the first step of the reservation process. We'll use the AWD number you enter to calculate your rental rate and benefits.

Either click the "View/Modify/Cancel" tab on the avis.ca homepage, or select "View/Modify/Cancel" from the Reservations tab at the top of the page. Enter your Last Name and your Reservation Confirmation Number and click the Find Reservation button. On the next page, select the Modify link listed next to your found reservation. You will then be able to modify specific information including your selected Rental Options, Personal Information, etc. for that reservation. Please remember that a change in your reservation could result in a rate change. To modify your time and place or vehicle class, click the Modify buttons next to those sections.

For those customers that have registered on avis.ca and have a My Avis profile, you can login and easily manage your upcoming reservations from your My Account page.

Enter your email address and click the Cancel Reservation button. We will confirm your reservation has been canceled, and send a cancellation confirmation email to the email address provided.

For those customers that have registered on avis.ca and have a My Avis profile, you can simply loginand easily manage your upcoming reservations from your My Account page.

The applicable terms and conditions will vary by location, but will always be shown in the rental jacket and rental document you receive at the time of rental, which together are your rental agreement. Be sure to check the bottom of your reservation confirmation for the specific conditions for your reservation.

Coupon discounts and vehicle class upgrades are not reflected in the rates quoted on avis.ca. At the time of rental, the participating location will apply the coupon entered to your reservation, and you will receive your discount or upgrade, subject to vehicle availability.

If your reservation is cancelled in advance, no cancellation fee will be assessed. In certain cases and with certain rates or vehicle groups, a cancellation fee may apply if an unwanted reservation is not cancelled at least 48 hours prior to the reserved pick-up time, or if the customer fails to pick up the vehicle. To avoid this fee, please cancel at least 48 hours in advance.

Availability of a specific rate or vehicle group may be limited for certain types of rates, vehicle groups or rental locations at certain times. 

When a vehicle is returned to a location other than the location from which it was rented, a one-way service fee may apply on certain rates.

Travel agents may book Avis via major Global Distribution Systems (GDS) including Sabre, Apollo, Worldspan and Amadeus. The Avis two-letter code in GDS is ZI.

In most cases, the minimum rental charge is for one day and is based on a 24-hour period. Beyond the 24-hour period, an hourly rate will be calculated as half the daily rate plus $.01. For example, a daily rate of $30.00 would equate to an hourly rate of $15.01. If a rental exceeds a 24-hour period by 1.5 hours, a 2-day charge will apply.

Some rate structures may include optional items, such as Loss Damage Waiver, in the rate. Rate displays will contain any included items.

Additional driver fees may apply in certain cases. Please see the section on "Additional Drivers". The fee for each additional driver is $10.00 per day, $50.00 per week. Maximum $60 per additional driver, per rental.

The following individuals are exempt from the fee but must be at least 25 years of age and in possession of a valid driver's license:

  • renter's employer or regular fellow employee when on company business
  • renter's spouse or domestic partner
  • disabled renters who have completed the non-licensed renter form

Most Avis rates are based on a 24-hour rental period and have a one-day minimum charge even if the vehicle is returned in less than 24 hours. If a rental exceeds a standard 24-hour period, an hourly rate will apply until that hourly rate accumulates to reach the additional day rate. In that event, the additional day rate would apply. Charges for optional items (such as Loss Damage Waiver) are charged at the full day rate for each partial day.
